Resumo:In this study, we investigate the consequences of the sanitary measures to combat COVID-19 on one dimension of religious policy: religious regulation. Using data collected through the Violent Incidents Database of the Observatory of Religious Freedom in Latin America (OLIRE), we apply the variables of the Religion and State dataset to four Latin American countries (Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Nicaragua) and compare the situation before and after the sanitary measures. We conclude that the measures taken to combat the coronavirus mainly restricted the collective dimension of freedom of worship, bringing religious regulation to similar levels as some authoritarian regimes. We also found evidence that some governments took advantage of the situation to increase their repression over religious groups.
